A Permanent Fix for Missing Teeth

Implants are the closest thing dentistry has to replacing a natural tooth — root, function and appearance included. Here's what's involved, and how to make sure the person doing the work is the right one for the job.

What They Are

A Titanium Root, a New Crown

A dental implant is a small titanium (or titanium-alloy) post placed into the jawbone, standing in for the root of a missing tooth. Once it has fused with the bone — a process called osseointegration, which typically takes a few months — a custom crown, bridge or denture is fitted on top. Unlike a bridge, an implant doesn't rely on neighbouring teeth for support, and unlike a removable denture, it stays put.

Why Vetting Matters

Skill Makes the Difference

Implant placement sits close to nerves, sinuses and blood vessels, and the long-term success of the treatment depends heavily on planning, technique and aftercare — not just the hardware used. That's why every implant specialist listed on Dentists We Trust has had their qualifications, registration and case history reviewed by peers before they're approved to appear in our directory.

What to Expect

The Treatment Journey

  • Assessment. A scan and examination to check bone density and plan implant placement.
  • Placement. The implant post is fitted under local anaesthetic, usually as day surgery.
  • Healing. A few months for the implant to fuse with the jawbone before restoration.
  • Restoration. A custom crown, bridge or denture is fitted to complete the treatment.
Aftercare

Looking After an Implant

Implants aren't susceptible to decay, but the gum and bone around them need the same care as natural teeth. Brushing twice daily, cleaning between teeth, and keeping up with regular hygienist visits all help prevent peri-implantitis — inflammation around the implant that can put its stability at risk. Most dentists will also recommend a check-up schedule specific to your implant for the first year or two.
